Obesity Surgery in the UK Rises 40% in the Past Year

WEBWIRE(press release)

The NHS Information Centre has revealed that the number of people in the UK who received obesity surgery on the NHS in the last twelve months was 2, 724 – representing an increase of 40% on the previous year.

Demand for obesity surgery has risen dramatically in recent months, putting a strain on this area of NHS provision. With one in four adults in the UK being obese, this strain is only set to rise - making difficult for those who really need the surgery to get the treatment on the NHS.

Due to such high levels of demand, obesity surgery is more commonly being sought outside of the NHS. There are a number of options available, from gastric balloons to gastric bands, Gastric Bypass Surgery or other less invasive treatments, which can make choosing the right option a somewhat daunting process.

Barrie Crabtree, Managing Director of The National Obesity Surgery Centre, the UK’s only dedicated weight loss surgery provider, comments: “It is important that when considering obesity surgery, you speak to someone who can advise you on all of the options available. It is also important that if you are looking to have surgery privately, you consider a provider who has a track record of performing your chosen option of obesity surgery, and an aftercare programme to assist you following the procedure.

“This report suggests that people are becoming more aware of the long term risks associated with obesity and are seeking help at an earlier stage. A number of high profile celebrities having gastric bands or stomach balloons fitted has also raised awareness of obesity surgery as an accessible option. Obesity surgery is not suitable for everyone, and advice should be sought from within specialists in the field”.

The National Obesity Surgery Centre is a dedicated UK based provider of obesity surgery, including lap band surgery and stomach balloons.
