Twentyman, who as a public patient has waited three years for the procedure, is taking the action to improve his health.

He has type 2 diabetes.

"I am about 22 stone (140kg) and I am hoping to get back to about 14 stone (89kg)," said Twentyman, who runs the Twentieth Man Homeless and Kids in Distress Fund.

"I guess it is a matter of life and death for me. I have started my own charity and I need to be up and going.

"I have got a couple of TV docos on the go. And I have a four-year-old granddaughter, Lotus, who I want to be able to run around with.

"A friend of mine had it done and he said the only thing he regretted was not getting it done sooner."

Mr Twentyman will undergo six hours of tests today before having the surgery.

He said he was ready to make the major changes to his diet that were required after the surgery.

"There is no more white bread and no more white rice and I have to say goodbye to big, thin barbecue steaks," Mr Twentyman said.

"This time next year I am looking forward to looking down and not seeing a big belly sticking out." For more information please do visit.
