Dr. Donald Balder, an advanced laparoscopic and bariatric surgeon with Advanced Surgical Associates, made medical history in February 2009 by performing a groundbreaking procedure to place a LAP-BAND® Advanced Performance System for weight loss.

According to a press release from Advanced Surgical Associates. this was the first single incision bariatric procedure of its kind performed in South Carolina.

Bariatric and advanced laparoscopic board certified general surgeon , Donald A. Balder, Jr. M.D., performed the procedure, known as SILS (Single Incision Laparoscopic Surgery) at Rivertown Out-Patient Surgery Center.

Dr Donald Balder’s practice has the only “Total Care Lap Band®” accreditation in the state of South Carolina. The “SILS” uses a small incision in or near the umbilicus which often results in a single “hidden scar,“ a cosmetic advance over the multiple visible scars associated with standard multi-port laparoscopy.

February’s SILS procedure was performed on a bariatric surgery patient in South Carolina. The patients typically have high blood pressure, sleep apnea, or other difficult to control health problems such as type II diabetes. Patients are typically discharged home the same day and are expected to return to normal activities within a few days. Like patients who have any types of bariatric surgery, she will also need to make long term dietary and behavior modifications in order to achieve, and maintain, significant weight loss.

“Obesity continues to affect a growing number of people in the United States, and many folks don’t know that for the severely obese, there are safer alternatives to gastric bypass surgery, such as the LAP-BAND® AP System,” said Dr. Donald Balder. “Patients need to work with their doctors and bariatric surgeons to determine the weight-loss treatment options that are most appropriate for them”.
